« Standard 1: Students read and understand a variety of materials

The goal for students at all levels is that they know and can use strategies--various ways of unlocking the meaning of words and larger blocks of text--to become successful readers. The strategies are applied in increasingly difficult reading material at each grade level. At all levels, students should be challenged to read literature and other materials that stimulate their interests and intellectual abilities. Reading from a wide variety of texts, both assigned and student selected, provides experience in gaining information and pleasure from diverse forms and perspectives.

CLASSROOM & TIME MANAGEMENT

Student Prerequisites:

Students should know the four digraphs sh, ch, wh, and th. It is helpful if students practice writing and words with digraphs. Student should be able to write a complete sentence.

Lesson Preparation:

Student should practice writing sentences in class. Students should also know the four digraphs.

Time Frame:

3 class periods. 30 Min. per class.

Implementation Steps:

Students will create a digraph mini book using the draw program of StarOffice. Using the line tool, students will draw one horizontal and one vertical line dividing their paper into four equal parts. Students will have 4 work areas or boxes. Using the text tool, student will type one of the 4 digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch)in each box. Student will then change font size and color of each digraph making sure the digraph is in the middle of the box. Each box will be one page in a mini digraph book.

Students will write two to three sentences in each digraph box. Each sentence will have at least one word spelled with the digraph in the box. Student will then change the color of the word to match the color of the digraph in the middle of the box. Students will do this for each box using the correct digraph.

Print project, cut, bind and share. In the end, students will have their own digraph book.
