Browser Setup
For use with web sites like FossWeb - www.fossweb.com

Some web sites require more than just the browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer) to use them fully. Certain plugins (extra pieces of software are required).

This is best explained in class, these notes cannot be complete.

Install the best Browser

First, install the latest browser. Internet Explorer 5 is best. Netscape 6 is also available. You can download these from www.netscape.com and microsoft.com. Look for the DOWNLOAD button near the top of the screen.

The installers are also available on the disks that came with your computer. If your computer is less than a year old it is probably fine and you don't need to re-install the browser.

Install the Plugins

There are 2 plugins that everyone should have; QuickTime and Macromedia Shockwave. Do not have the browser running when installing the plugins.

Quicktime from Apple

EarthBrowser and FossWeb both require Quicktime version 4. Quicktime allows movies and virtual reality pictures to work. You can download the Quicktime installer from www.apple.com/quicktime/download.

When downloading the file will probably be on your desktop. Double click, read and follow directions. This installer will download the real stuff over the net. More and more installers are working this way. Restart the computer afterwards.

Macromedia Shockwave Player

Fossweb and many other interactive web sites require this. It allows the interaction or game playing behavior.

You can download from Macromedia - macromedia.com/shockwave/download . Note the directions on the download page. After installing, start the browser and go to FossWeb. This will trigger the rest of the install.
