Go Shoot Some Photos!

During the shooting time today, the point is not to make great photos but rather to practice the new settings and techniques we have learned. You might get a good shot too! But it will lead to more and more better shots in the future if you really internalize the content from today's class.

When we arrive at the shooting location I will explain these tasks more fully than what is listed here. Some will be review of the work we have already done and some will be new. You could use this list to practice again later.

  1. Set your ISO to a level that is appropriate. Be sure to note if your lighting condition changes dramatically (outside vs. inside for example) We will use the technique in my article at the Digital Photography School: http://digital-photography-school.com/use-program-mode-set-iso/
  2. Set your White Balance appropriate to your shooting conditions. Be sure to note if your light temperture condition changes dramatically (sun to shade for example).
  3. Using Aperture priority, take a photo with a very deep depth of field and one with a very shallow one.
  4. Learn to lock your focus and recompose the shot.
  5. Learn what Hyperfocal distance is.
  6. Switch between Single focus mode and Continuous focus mode depending upon our subject.
  7. Learn to change to Manual focus mode.
  8. Learn why your camera won't take a picture in Single focus mode sometimes.
  9. Learn the basics of the camera's metering modes.
  10. Learn to adjust your playback settings so you can see the histograms, exposure settings and over exposed areas (the blinkies) on your screen.
